In April and May of 2003 a team of 10 Eastbourne young people went to Nepal for a short term mission. The objectives of the team were to increase their awareness of the living conditions in a developing country and to put their skills towards helping a community in need.
The team spent two weeks in a remote village in the area of Bihunkot, teaching in the local primary school. They also funded and assisted in the construction of a toilet for the school. On returning to Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, the team spent the rest of their time at the Prisoner's Assistance Mission (PAM). This children's home housed the children of women who had been imprisoned.
The need in Nepal and in particular the needs of the children at PAM had a huge impact on the team from Eastbourne. When they arrived home and shared their experiences with their community the overwhelming response was that their support of needy children in Nepal should continue.
As a result of this desire to help, the Orphans of Nepal Trust (ONT) was formed and incorperated on the 3rd of September 2003 under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957.
Registered as a charity in 2008, ONT has raised over $100,000 for the sole purpose of providing basic necessities for orphaned children in the Kathmandu Valley including: food, accommodation, clothing, health care and education.
The trust continues today with a team of trustees and volunteer suporters raising funds and ensuring that the money is responsibily administered for the benefit of needy children in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. To date over $100,000 has been raised.
The secondary function of ONT is to foster a connection between the Eastbourne community and the Nepali children they support.
